Pokhara to Chitwan National Park: How to Get There

By Pokhara Vehicles ·

Chitwan National Park is Nepal’s classic jungle escape — a UNESCO World Heritage site in the lowland Terai where you can track one-horned rhinoceros, spot crocodiles on a dugout canoe and, if you are lucky, glimpse a Bengal tiger. It pairs perfectly with Pokhara for travellers who want both mountains and wildlife. Here is how to make the journey easily.

Distance and drive time

Sauraha, the main tourist gateway to Chitwan, is about 150 km from Pokhara. By private car allow roughly 5–6 hours, descending from the hills into the flat, warm Terai. The route runs via the Prithvi Highway toward Mugling, then south along the Narayani river corridor toward Bharatpur and Sauraha.

Pokhara–Chitwan quick facts

  • Distance: ~150 km to Sauraha
  • Drive time: 5–6 hours by private car
  • Terrain: hill road down to flat, humid lowland — pack lighter clothing
  • Vehicle options: car, SUV or Hiace van for families and groups
  • One-way private car: from NPR — ask for a quote
  • Best season: October to March for comfortable temperatures and good wildlife viewing

What to do in Chitwan

Jungle safari

A guided jeep safari into the park is the headline activity, with strong chances of seeing rhino, deer, wild boar, monkeys and abundant birdlife.

Canoe on the Rapti River

A quiet dugout-canoe ride is the best way to see gharial and mugger crocodiles basking on the banks, plus kingfishers and storks.

Elephant Breeding Centre & Tharu culture

Visit the breeding centre, learn about conservation, and catch an evening Tharu stick-dance performance in the village — a genuine slice of local culture.

How long should you stay?

Two nights in Sauraha is the sweet spot: arrive, enjoy a full day of safari and river activities, and depart relaxed. Many guests continue from Chitwan to Kathmandu or Lumbini rather than doubling back, and we can plan the whole chain as one smooth private itinerary.

Because the drive drops into hot lowland, a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle makes a real difference, especially with children or older travellers. Our drivers know the good rest stops along the way and the quickest approach into Sauraha.

When to visit and what to pack

The cooler, drier months from October to March are the most comfortable for safaris and give the best wildlife sightings, as animals gather near the rivers. April and May are hotter but still rewarding for keen wildlife-watchers. The monsoon (Jun–Sep) brings lush greenery but high heat, humidity and occasional park closures. Whatever the season, pack neutral-coloured clothing, insect repellent, a hat, sunscreen and binoculars if you have them. Mornings and late afternoons are the prime hours for activity, so build your schedule around them.

A tip on trip planning

Chitwan sits neatly between Pokhara and both Kathmandu and Lumbini, so it is easy to visit without backtracking. Tell us where you are heading next and we will plan a one-way route that saves you hours on the road.
