Pokhara to Kathmandu by Car: Distance, Time, Stops & Fare
By Pokhara Vehicles ·
The drive between Pokhara and Kathmandu is Nepal’s busiest tourist route, and a private car is by far the most comfortable way to do it. You travel on your own schedule, stop where you like, keep your luggage with you and skip the crowded tourist bus. This guide covers the distance, honest timings, the best places to break the journey and what to expect on fares.
Distance and drive time
It is about 200 km along the Prithvi Highway, following the Marsyangdi and Trishuli rivers for much of the way. In a private car allow 6–7 hours including a couple of short stops. Traffic around Mugling and the approach into the Kathmandu valley can add time, so we recommend a morning start to arrive comfortably before evening.
Pokhara–Kathmandu quick facts
- Distance: ~200 km via the Prithvi Highway
- Drive time: 6–7 hours in a private car (traffic dependent)
- Vehicle options: sedan/car, SUV/Scorpio, or Toyota Hiace van for groups
- Best departure: early morning to beat afternoon traffic
- One-way private car: from NPR — ask for a quote by vehicle and group size
- Airport transfer add-on: straight to Tribhuvan International on request
The best stops along the way
Manakamana cable car (Kurintar)
About halfway, a cable car climbs to the hilltop Manakamana temple — a worthwhile detour if you have time and want to stretch your legs with a view.
Riverside lunch at Mugling or Malekhu
Mugling is the traditional lunch halt with rows of highway restaurants. Malekhu is known for its fresh fish. Either makes a natural break at roughly the midpoint.
Bandipur (short detour)
If you can spare an extra couple of hours, the preserved Newari hill town of Bandipur, just off the highway near Dumre, is one of the prettiest stops in central Nepal.
Car vs bus vs flight
A tourist bus is cheapest but fixed and slow. A 25-minute flight is fastest but weather-dependent and misses the scenery. A private car sits in the sweet spot: door-to-door comfort, flexible stops, and space for luggage — ideal for families, older travellers and anyone carrying trekking gear.
We can also run the route in reverse (Kathmandu to Pokhara) or fold it into a longer loop taking in Chitwan or Bandipur. Whatever your plan, our local drivers know the highway’s rhythms and the safest places to pause.
Tips for a smooth journey
- Leave early: a 7–8 am start means you arrive with daylight to spare and dodge the worst of the traffic.
- Break it up: plan one proper stop for lunch and a couple of short leg-stretches rather than driving straight through.
- Travelling with luggage or gear? Choose an SUV or Hiace so bags ride comfortably rather than on your lap.
- Motion sickness: the highway is winding in the middle section — sit up front and keep water and a light snack handy.
- Monsoon season: occasional landslides can slow the road in Jun–Aug, so allow a little buffer if you have a flight to catch.
Because it is a private transfer, you set the pace. Want to leave at dawn, linger over lunch in Bandipur, or drive straight to the airport for an onward flight? Just tell us and we will build the day around your schedule.
