Pokhara to Muktinath by Jeep: Route, Cost, Permits & Itinerary

By Pokhara Vehicles ·

Muktinath (3,710 m) is one of the most sacred sites in Nepal — holy to both Hindus and Buddhists — set high in the Mustang region above the Kali Gandaki valley. The overland jeep journey from Pokhara is an adventure in itself, winding through deep gorges, apple orchards and the arid, wind-scoured landscape of Lower Mustang. Here is how the trip actually works.

The route: Pokhara to Muktinath

The road follows the Kali Gandaki, the world’s deepest gorge, running between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. The typical driving line is Pokhara → Beni → Tatopani → Ghasa → Marpha → Jomsom → Kagbeni → Ranipauwa (Muktinath). The lower section is sealed; the higher section is rough mountain road that genuinely needs a 4WD jeep and an experienced local driver, especially after rain.

Muktinath jeep trip quick facts

  • Distance: ~170–190 km each way
  • Drive time: roughly 8–10 hours one way, broken over the itinerary
  • Vehicle: 4WD jeep (Scorpio/Bolero class) strongly recommended
  • Muktinath elevation: 3,710 m — go slowly to acclimatise
  • Permits: ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area) entry permit required; we help arrange it
  • Best season: March–June and September–November; winter is cold with possible snow
  • Private jeep tour: from NPR — ask for a quote (depends on days, group and season)

Permits you will need

Muktinath, Jomsom and Marpha lie inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, so every visitor needs an ACAP entry permit. This is different from the Restricted Area Permit required for Upper Mustang beyond Kagbeni — a standard Muktinath trip does not enter that zone. We can help you organise the ACAP paperwork before departure so there are no delays at the checkposts.

A practical 3-day itinerary

Day 1 — Pokhara to Jomsom or Marpha

Early start, descend into the Kali Gandaki, lunch in Tatopani, and overnight in charming Marpha (famous for apples, brandy and its whitewashed stone lanes) or Jomsom.

Day 2 — Muktinath and back down

Drive up through Kagbeni to Ranipauwa, then walk the short final stretch to the temple. Visit the 108 water spouts and the eternal flame, take your time to acclimatise, and descend to overnight in Marpha or Tatopani.

Day 3 — return to Pokhara

A relaxed drive back with photo stops. Many guests add a soak at the Tatopani hot springs on the way.

Prefer two days? It is possible but long and tiring at altitude. We usually recommend three so you actually enjoy the scenery rather than just enduring the road.

What to pack and who it suits

The Kali Gandaki is one of the windiest valleys in the world, so pack a windproof layer even in warmer months, along with sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm for the strong high-altitude sun. Carry enough cash for meals and permits, as card facilities and ATMs are unreliable beyond Beni. This trip suits pilgrims, families and anyone who wants to reach the high Himalaya without a long trek — but if you have heart or breathing concerns, mention them when booking so we can pace the ascent sensibly. Motion-sensitive travellers should sit in the front and take a light meal before the rough sections.

Can I combine Muktinath with other sights?

Yes. Many guests add a night in Marpha to explore its apple orchards and distillery, a soak at the Tatopani hot springs, or a short walk around Kagbeni’s medieval alleys. If you have extra days, the trip pairs well with Pokhara sightseeing before you set off.
