Annapurna Base Camp Trek: Transport from Pokhara
By Pokhara Vehicles ·
The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek is one of Nepal’s most rewarding walks, leading you into a natural amphitheatre of giants at 4,130 m, ringed by Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre and Hiunchuli. Most treks start and finish near Pokhara, so getting the road transport right at both ends makes the whole trip smoother. Here is what you need to know.
Where does the ABC trek start?
There is no single trailhead — it depends on your itinerary. The common road heads reached from Pokhara are Nayapul (the classic start), Kimche (for a quicker climb toward Ghandruk) and Jhinu Danda / Siwai further up the valley, which shortens the walk-in. Many trekkers combine ABC with the Poon Hill loop.
Trailhead transport quick facts
- Pokhara to Nayapul: ~42 km, about 1.5–2 hours by road
- Pokhara to Kimche: a little further on a rougher, steeper road — jeep recommended
- Pokhara to Jhinu/Siwai: longest and roughest; 4WD jeep needed, saves trekking days
- ABC elevation: 4,130 m — acclimatise properly on the way up
- Permits: ACAP entry permit and TIMS card required; we can point you to the offices
- Private transfer: from NPR — ask for a quote (one-way drop or timed return pickup)
Car or jeep?
For Nayapul, a comfortable car is fine — the road is mostly sealed. For Kimche, Jhinu or Siwai, the track is rough, steep and often needs a 4WD jeep, especially in or after the monsoon. If you want to trim a day or two of walking off the classic route, a jeep to the higher road head is the way to do it, and we will match you with the right vehicle and an experienced driver.
Permits and paperwork
Every trekker in the Annapurna region needs an ACAP entry permit and a TIMS card. These are arranged in Pokhara (or Kathmandu) before you set off; carry them, plus a photo ID, as there are checkposts along the trail. We are happy to point you to the right offices so you are not scrambling on departure morning.
Getting the pickup right
The most common logistics mistake is not arranging the return. After days on the trail, the last thing you want is to haggle for an overpriced taxi at Nayapul. We can hold your pickup for the exact day you finish and even store a bag of clean city clothes for you in Pokhara while you trek. Give us your rough itinerary and we will keep a driver ready at the agreed time.
A typical ABC transport plan
A popular approach is a morning drive from Pokhara to the road head, several days walking up to Base Camp and back down via Jhinu Danda (with its famous hot springs), then a jeep pickup at Siwai or Nayapul for the ride home. Whether you want a simple one-way drop or a fully timed drop-and-collect, we will handle the driving so you can focus on the mountains.
