How to Get to Pokhara from Kakarbhitta & Eastern Nepal

By Pokhara Vehicles ·

Eastern Nepal — the tea hills of Ilam, the border town of Kakarbhitta, and cities like Dharan, Itahari and Biratnagar — sits a long way from Pokhara, right across the country. It is a big journey, but a very doable one. Here is how to plan the trip from the east, whether you prefer the long scenic drive or a time-saving flight.

The distance is real — plan for it

Kakarbhitta, on the Indian border near Siliguri, is roughly 600–650 km from Pokhara along the Mahendra (East–West) Highway across the Terai. This is a full one to two day drive, not an afternoon hop, so the smart approach is either to break it into comfortable stages or to fly part of the way.

Eastern Nepal to Pokhara quick facts

  • Kakarbhitta to Pokhara: ~600–650 km via the Mahendra Highway
  • By road: a long 13–16 hours of driving — best split over two days
  • Fastest option: fly Bhadrapur or Biratnagar to Kathmandu, then car or flight to Pokhara
  • Scenic detour: the tea gardens of Ilam are worth a stop
  • Vehicle: comfortable car or Hiace for the long Terai highway
  • Private transfer: from NPR — ask for a quote for multi-day routing

Your options from the east

Fly to shortcut the distance

The quickest way is to fly from Bhadrapur (near Kakarbhitta and Ilam) or Biratnagar to Kathmandu, then continue to Pokhara by a short flight or a private car. This turns a two-day slog into a single comfortable day. We can arrange the Kathmandu–Pokhara leg — see our Kathmandu to Pokhara guide.

Drive the East–West Highway

If you would rather see the country, the overland route crosses the length of the Terai. A sensible plan is to break the journey with a night around Chitwan or Butwal, rather than attempting it in one exhausting push. A private car with a driver who knows the highway makes the long distance far more bearable, and you can add worthwhile stops along the way.

Worthwhile stops en route

Coming from the far east, the tea gardens of Ilam make a beautiful start to the trip. Further along, Chitwan National Park is almost on the highway and breaks the drive perfectly — see our Chitwan to Pokhara guide. Many travellers turn the long transfer into a mini road trip rather than a straight dash.

Tips for the long haul

  • Split the drive: two comfortable days beats one exhausting one.
  • Consider flying the longest leg: it often costs less time and stress than it seems.
  • Start each day early: Terai afternoons are hot and highways get busy.
  • Let us plan the overnight: we will pick sensible stops so driving hours stay reasonable.
