How to Get to Pokhara from Kathmandu: Car, Tourist Bus or Flight
By Pokhara Vehicles ·
Kathmandu to Pokhara is the journey almost every visitor to Nepal makes at some point, and there are three sensible ways to do it: a private car, a tourist bus, or a short domestic flight. Each has its place. This guide lays out the real travel times, rough costs and trade-offs so you can pick the option that fits your budget, your schedule and how you like to travel.
The three ways to travel
Private car with driver
The most flexible and comfortable choice. You leave when you want, keep your luggage beside you, stop for photos and lunch, and let a local driver handle the winding Prithvi Highway. It is the obvious pick for families, older travellers, anyone with trekking gear, or a small group splitting the cost.
Tourist bus
Tourist buses leave Kathmandu (mostly from around Sorhakhutte / Kanti Path) in the morning and take roughly 7–8 hours with a couple of set stops. They are inexpensive and perfectly fine, but you travel on a fixed schedule and share the pace of everyone else on board.
Domestic flight
The 25-minute hop between Kathmandu and Pokhara is the fastest option and, on a clear day, gives you a stunning window seat along the Himalaya. The catch is that flights depend on the weather and add airport time at both ends, so the door-to-door saving is smaller than it looks.
Kathmandu to Pokhara quick facts
- Distance: ~200 km via the Prithvi Highway
- Private car: 6–7 hours door to door, flexible stops
- Tourist bus: 7–8 hours, fixed morning departure
- Flight: ~25 minutes in the air, plus airport time
- Best departure: early morning by road to beat traffic and arrive in daylight
- Private car: from NPR — ask for a quote by vehicle and group size
Best stops on the drive
If you travel by road, the journey becomes part of the trip. Roughly halfway, the Manakamana cable car at Kurintar climbs to a hilltop wish-fulfilling temple — a memorable stretch of the legs. Mugling and Malekhu are the traditional lunch halts, with Malekhu known for its fresh river fish. And with a couple of spare hours you can detour up to Bandipur, the preserved Newari hill town just off the highway near Dumre. See our Bandipur day-trip guide for more on that stop.
Which option should you choose?
Choose the flight if time is tight and the weather is settled. Choose the tourist bus if you are counting every rupee and do not mind a fixed schedule. Choose a private car if you value comfort, flexible stops and door-to-door service — especially with a family, luggage or an early flight to catch afterwards. For the full breakdown of the drive itself, see our detailed Pokhara–Kathmandu by car guide (the route works just as well in reverse).
Tips for a smooth trip
- Start early: a 7–8 am road departure means daylight arrival and lighter traffic.
- Motion sickness: the middle section is winding — sit up front and carry water and a light snack.
- Monsoon (Jun–Aug): occasional landslides can slow the road, so allow buffer time before onward flights.
- Catching a flight in Pokhara? A private car can drop you straight at the terminal.
