How to Get to Pokhara from Lumbini & Bhairahawa
By Pokhara Vehicles ·
Many travellers reach Pokhara straight after visiting Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, or after landing at Bhairahawa (Gautam Buddha International Airport). The good news is that the two are linked by one of Nepal’s most scenic highways. Here is how to make the trip from Lumbini or Bhairahawa up to Pokhara.
The route: the Siddhartha Highway
From Lumbini you first reach nearby Bhairahawa (Siddharthanagar), then climb north on the Siddhartha Highway through Butwal, Palpa (Tansen) and the Kali Gandaki valley to Pokhara. It is a beautiful but winding mountain road that follows river gorges much of the way.
Lumbini / Bhairahawa to Pokhara quick facts
- Distance: ~185–200 km via Butwal and Palpa
- Private car: about 6–7 hours, door to door
- Tourist/local bus: roughly 7–8 hours
- Flight: short hops operate between Bhairahawa and Pokhara on some schedules
- Road character: scenic and winding — allow time and expect a few slow sections
- Private car: from NPR — ask for a quote by vehicle and group size
Your options
Private car with driver
The most comfortable way, and it lets you break the drive at Tansen (Palpa), a charming hill town with Newari architecture and mountain views that most bus travellers miss. A car also collects you directly from your Lumbini hotel or the Bhairahawa airport — useful after a long day of sightseeing or a flight.
Bus
Buses run from Bhairahawa’s bus park to Pokhara throughout the day. They are the budget option, but the winding road feels longer on a crowded bus, and you will need local transport from Lumbini to the bus park first.
Coming from the Indian border?
Bhairahawa is only a short drive from the Sunauli/Belahiya border with India, so this is the same road most overland travellers from Gorakhpur and northern India use. If you are crossing from India, see our dedicated guide on getting to Pokhara from the Sunauli border. For the reverse trip — Pokhara down to Lumbini — our Lumbini pilgrimage guide covers what to see.
Tips for the journey
- Start early: the mountain section is best driven in daylight.
- Motion sickness: the Palpa stretch is windy — sit up front and pace your meals.
- Break at Tansen: a lunch or coffee stop turns a long drive into a highlight.
- Flights: quick but weather-dependent; keep a road option in mind as a backup.
Break the journey at Tansen (Palpa)
If you have time, the hill town of Tansen, roughly midway on the Siddhartha Highway, is the perfect place to break the drive. Once an important Newari trading centre, it has handsome old streets, the hilltop Srinagar Danda viewpoint over the Himalaya, and a relaxed pace that few travellers pause to enjoy. An overnight here turns a long transfer into two comfortable half-days and adds a genuine highlight to your trip.
Should you visit Lumbini first?
If you are heading up from the border, it makes sense to see Lumbini before you climb to Pokhara, since backtracking to the Terai later is a long detour. Give yourself at least half a day — ideally an overnight — to walk the sacred garden and the international monastic zone at a peaceful pace. Then drive up to Pokhara refreshed rather than rushing both in one exhausting day.
Whether you are finishing a Buddhist pilgrimage or arriving on an international flight at Bhairahawa, we can meet you and drive you comfortably up to Pokhara — and plan the rest of your stay from there.
