How to Reach Pokhara from Nepalgunj & the Far-West
By Pokhara Vehicles ·
Nepal’s far-west — Nepalgunj, Bardia National Park, Dhangadhi and the Karnali region — is off the usual tourist track, which is exactly why it rewards those who make the trip. Getting from there to Pokhara means crossing a good chunk of the country, so a little planning goes a long way. Here is how to do it.
Understand the distance
Nepalgunj lies roughly 450–500 km west of Pokhara along the Mahendra (East–West) Highway and connecting hill roads. That is a long day’s drive or a comfortable two-stage journey. As with the far-east, flying can save a great deal of time if your schedule is tight.
Far-west to Pokhara quick facts
- Nepalgunj to Pokhara: ~450–500 km by road
- By road: roughly 10–13 hours — consider splitting it over two days
- Fastest option: fly Nepalgunj to Pokhara or via Kathmandu
- Wildlife detour: Bardia National Park, one of Nepal’s best for tigers, is near Nepalgunj
- Vehicle: comfortable car or Hiace for the long highway
- Private transfer: from NPR — ask for a quote for multi-day routing
Your options from the far-west
Fly and save a day
Nepalgunj is a regional air hub, and flying — either directly toward Pokhara where scheduled, or via Kathmandu — is the quickest way to bridge the distance. We can meet your flight and handle the onward leg, so you step off the plane into a waiting car.
Drive the highway
The overland route follows the Mahendra Highway east across the plains before climbing to Pokhara. It is a long way, so we recommend breaking it with an overnight — around Butwal or Chitwan works well — rather than driving through in one go. A steady, experienced driver and a comfortable vehicle make all the difference on a journey this length.
Make Bardia part of the trip
If you are starting near Nepalgunj, Bardia National Park is one of Nepal’s finest and least crowded wildlife destinations, with a genuine chance of spotting a Bengal tiger. Building a night or two there into your route turns a long transfer into a real adventure. Further along, Chitwan makes a natural halfway stop — see our Chitwan to Pokhara guide.
Tips for the journey
- Weigh flying vs driving: for the far-west, a flight often pays for itself in time and comfort.
- Break long drives: plan a sensible overnight rather than a marathon day.
- Carry cash: ATMs thin out away from the main cities.
- Tell us your priorities: we will balance cost, time and comfort for your group.
Best time to make the trip
The far-west and the Terai get very hot from April to June, so the cooler, drier months of October to March are far more comfortable for a long overland journey — and they are also the best months for a Bardia wildlife safari and for clear mountain views once you reach Pokhara. The monsoon (June to September) can bring flooding and the odd washed-out section on the plains, so if you travel then, build in extra buffer time and lean toward flying the longest leg.
Who this route suits
This journey is for travellers who are already exploring the far-west — on a Bardia safari, a Karnali rafting trip, or a visit to the remote districts — and want to continue to Pokhara without flying all the way back to Kathmandu. It rewards those with a little time and a sense of adventure. If your schedule is tight, do not feel you must drive the whole way: a short flight can transform the trip, and we will happily arrange the Pokhara-side leg whichever way you arrive.
Reaching Pokhara from the far-west takes some planning, but it opens up a side of Nepal few visitors see. Share your route and dates and we will put together the smoothest combination of flights and driving.
