Pokhara in 5 Days: A Sample Itinerary
By Pokhara Vehicles ·
With five days you can enjoy Pokhara at a genuinely relaxed pace and add a proper adventure into the mountains. This sample itinerary blends the city classics, a day trip and a two-day journey into the high country — the kind of trip that shows you both the gentle lakeside side of Pokhara and the dramatic Himalaya beyond.
5-day Pokhara quick facts
- Best for: travellers who want depth, not just the highlights
- Includes: city sights, a day trip, and a 2-day mountain jeep trip or short trek
- Mountain add-on: Muktinath/Jomsom by jeep, or a Poon Hill / Ghandruk taster
- Permits: ACAP needed for the Annapurna region — we help arrange it
- Getting around: car in the city, 4WD jeep for the mountains
- Private 5-day tour: from NPR — ask for a quote
Days 1–2: Pokhara essentials
Follow our 2-day Pokhara plan: a Sarangkot sunrise, Phewa Lake, the World Peace Pagoda, Davis Falls, Gupteshwor Cave and the International Mountain Museum. This settles you into the city and covers all the classics before you head further afield.
Day 3: A day trip beyond the city
Take a break from town with a trip to Bandipur (our Bandipur guide) or a quiet day at Begnas Lake. This is also a good day to rest and prepare for the mountain leg to come.
Days 4–5: Into the mountains
Option A — Muktinath & Jomsom by jeep
Drive the spectacular Kali Gandaki gorge to the sacred temple of Muktinath (3,710 m), overnighting in apple-famous Marpha or Jomsom. Our Muktinath jeep guide covers the route and permits.
Option B — a short trek taster
Prefer to walk? A two-day Poon Hill or Ghandruk loop gives you a famous mountain sunrise and Gurung village life. See our trailhead transport guide.
Make the most of five days
The beauty of five days is that you are not choosing between the lake and the mountains — you get both. We handle the logistics: a comfortable car for the city days and an experienced driver with a 4WD jeep for the high roads, plus help with ACAP permits and sensible overnight stops so altitude never takes you by surprise. If you have less time, the 3-day itinerary is a great starting point.
A note on altitude and pacing
If you choose the Muktinath option, remember you are climbing from Pokhara’s mild ~820 m to 3,710 m in a couple of days. We break the drive with an overnight in Marpha or Jomsom rather than pushing straight up, which gives your body time to adjust and lets you actually enjoy the scenery. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol on the ascent, and mention any heart or breathing concerns when you book so we can pace the route sensibly. The Kali Gandaki is one of the windiest valleys on earth, so pack a windproof layer even in warm months.
Where to stay along the way
In the city, Lakeside is the natural base — walkable, lively and close to everything. On the mountain leg, the villages of Marpha and Jomsom have comfortable teahouse-style lodges with hearty Thakali food, while a Poon Hill or Ghandruk trek uses simple but welcoming trailside guesthouses. We can suggest and help arrange places that suit your comfort level and budget at each stop.
