Pokhara to Jomsom, Marpha & Manang: Mountain Road Trip Guide

By Pokhara Vehicles ·

For travellers who want big-mountain scenery without a multi-week trek, a jeep road trip into the Annapurna high country is unforgettable. Two great destinations sit either side of the massif: Jomsom and Marpha in the Kali Gandaki valley (Lower Mustang), and Manang up the Marsyangdi valley on the classic Annapurna Circuit road. Here is how each works from Pokhara.

Pokhara to Jomsom & Marpha

This is the same Kali Gandaki route used for Muktinath. You descend to Beni, then climb the gorge past Tatopani and Ghasa to Marpha (2,670 m), the beautiful whitewashed apple village, and Jomsom (2,720 m), the windy regional hub. It is a rough but spectacular drive between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri giants.

Pokhara to Manang

Manang (3,519 m) sits up the Marsyangdi valley. The usual line is Pokhara → Besisahar → Chame → Manang on a demanding 4WD-only mountain road. The village is a famous acclimatisation stop on the Annapurna Circuit, ringed by soaring peaks and glaciers — but the altitude is serious, so build in time to adjust.

Mountain road-trip quick facts

  • Marpha/Jomsom: ~150–170 km via the Kali Gandaki; a long, rough day’s drive each way
  • Manang: via Besisahar and Chame; a tough 4WD route, best over 2–3 days
  • Vehicle: 4WD jeep essential; experienced mountain driver a must
  • Altitude: Manang 3,519 m — acclimatise and go slowly
  • Permits: ACAP entry permit for the Annapurna region; we help arrange it
  • Best season: spring and autumn; roads can close in heavy monsoon or snow
  • Private jeep tour: from NPR — ask for a quote by route, days and season

Which trip is right for you?

Choose Jomsom & Marpha (often combined with Muktinath) for the dramatic gorge, apple orchards, Thakali food and comparatively accessible villages. Choose Manang for high-alpine grandeur and Annapurna Circuit atmosphere if you have more time and are confident with altitude. Both reward you with landscapes that feel a world away from Pokhara’s green lakes.

Tips for a comfortable trip

  • Break the journey — these are not one-day round trips if you want to enjoy them.
  • Pack warm layers; nights are cold even when Pokhara is warm.
  • Carry cash; ATMs are scarce beyond the main towns.
  • Let us plan the overnight stops so driving hours stay sensible.

Our family has been driving these mountain roads for years and will match you with the right jeep and a driver who knows every switchback.

A note on safety and timing

These are high-mountain roads with steep drop-offs, river crossings and fast-changing weather, so an experienced local driver and a well-maintained 4WD are not luxuries — they are the whole point. We plan the day’s driving to finish before dark, keep the pace steady on the exposed sections, and build in acclimatisation nights on the Manang route so altitude never takes you by surprise. If snow or landslides close a section, your driver will know the alternatives and the sensible call. Tell us your dates and comfort level, and we will design a route that feels like an adventure rather than an ordeal.
