Pokhara to Bandipur Day Trip: The Perfect Newari Hill Town

By Pokhara Vehicles ·

Perched on a ridge high above the Prithvi Highway, Bandipur is one of central Nepal’s hidden gems — a beautifully preserved Newari trading town with a car-free main street, elegant old buildings and sweeping views of the Himalaya. It makes a wonderful day trip from Pokhara, or a relaxed overnight stop on the way to Kathmandu. Here is how to do it.

How far is Bandipur from Pokhara?

Bandipur is about 72–80 km east of Pokhara, reached by turning off the Prithvi Highway at Dumre and climbing a winding hill road to the ridge. Allow roughly 2–2.5 hours each way by private car. The final climb is narrow and steep but short, and the reward at the top is a town that feels a world away from the busy highway below.

Bandipur day trip quick facts

  • Distance: ~72–80 km from Pokhara (via Dumre)
  • Drive time: 2–2.5 hours each way
  • Trip length: a full day, or an easy overnight
  • Vehicle options: car/sedan, SUV or Hiace van for groups
  • Indicative fare: from NPR — ask for a quote for a return day trip
  • Best paired with: a stop en route to or from Kathmandu

What to do in Bandipur

Walk the old bazaar

The traffic-free main street is lined with carved wooden facades and shuttered shopfronts from the town’s days as a thriving trade post on the India–Tibet route. It is made for strolling, with cafes and viewpoints along the way.

Tundikhel viewpoint

A short walk from the bazaar, this open promenade offers a spectacular panorama of the Himalaya — from Dhaulagiri across to the Annapurnas and Manaslu on a clear day.

Siddha Cave and hill walks

Adventurous visitors can hike down to Siddha Cave, one of the largest caves in Nepal, or take gentle ridge walks through terraced fields and Magar villages.

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip is very doable and gives you several relaxed hours in town. But Bandipur is especially magical in the early morning and evening, when the day-trippers have gone and the mountains catch the light — so if your schedule allows, an overnight is well worth it. Because it sits right off the Pokhara–Kathmandu highway, Bandipur also breaks up that long drive perfectly.

Why go with a private car?

Public transport to Bandipur means changing buses at Dumre and waiting for a local jeep up the hill — slow and unpredictable. With a private car you leave Pokhara when you like, drive straight to the top, and have a driver ready to bring you home in the evening. It turns a logistically fiddly trip into an easy, scenic day out.
