Pokhara Weather & What to Pack, Season by Season
By Pokhara Vehicles ·
Knowing what the weather is really like — and packing accordingly — makes a big difference to a Pokhara trip. The city itself sits at a mild ~820 m, but if you head up to Sarangkot or into the mountains, conditions change fast. Here is an honest, season-by-season guide to Pokhara’s weather and exactly what to bring.
Pokhara weather quick facts
- Autumn (Oct–Nov): clear, dry, comfortable — the best all-round season
- Winter (Dec–Feb): cool, often crystal-clear mornings; chilly at dawn
- Spring (Mar–May): warm, blooming, with afternoon haze building
- Monsoon (Jun–Sep): warm, wet and humid; peaks often hidden by cloud
- Always pack: layers, sun protection, a light rain layer and comfortable shoes
- Mountains are colder: add warm layers for Sarangkot, Muktinath or any trek
Autumn (October–November): pack light layers
The peak season. Days are mild and pleasant, nights are cool, and the post-monsoon air gives the sharpest mountain views of the year. Pack light layers for warm days and a fleece or light jacket for cool evenings and early Sarangkot starts. Sunglasses and sunscreen are a must.
Winter (December–February): pack a warm layer for mornings
Pokhara winters are gentler than many expect — sunny days are comfortable — but dawn and evening are genuinely cold, and a Sarangkot sunrise can be bitter before the sun is up. Pack a warm jacket, a hat and gloves for early starts, plus layers you can peel off as the day warms. Mornings are often beautifully clear.
Spring (March–May): pack for warmth and haze
Spring is warm and colourful, with rhododendrons blooming on the hills. Mornings are usually clear, but haze builds through the afternoon, so plan viewpoints early. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, sun protection and a light layer for evenings. It is a lovely time for the Poon Hill and Ghandruk trails.
Monsoon (June–September): pack for rain and humidity
The monsoon brings warm, humid days and frequent rain, especially in the afternoon and at night. The hills turn brilliant green, crowds thin and prices drop, but the mountains are often hidden. Pack a good rain jacket or umbrella, quick-drying clothes, sandals and insect repellent, and stay flexible with mountain plans as roads can be affected by landslides.
What to pack for the mountains
If your trip includes Sarangkot, a jeep trip to Muktinath or any trek, remember that altitude means cold — even when Pokhara is warm. Add warm layers, a windproof jacket, a hat, gloves, strong sun protection and lip balm, whatever the season. The Kali Gandaki valley in particular is famously windy.
