Top Things to Do in Pokhara
By Pokhara Vehicles ·
Pokhara is Nepal’s adventure and lake capital, and there is far more to do than most visitors expect. From dawn mountain views to paragliding, peaceful boat rides and hidden caves, here are the top things to do — a mix of the famous highlights and a few local favourites — so you can build a trip that suits your energy and interests.
Things to do in Pokhara quick facts
- Signature experience: sunrise over the Annapurnas from Sarangkot
- Big adventure: tandem paragliding from Sarangkot over Phewa Lake
- Most relaxing: a boat ride on Phewa Lake to Tal Barahi Temple
- Best views: the World Peace Pagoda above the lake
- Best season: October to April for clear skies and calm weather
- Getting around: a private car with driver links the scattered sights easily
1. Watch sunrise from Sarangkot
The definitive Pokhara experience: an early climb to Sarangkot to watch first light hit Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range. Our Sarangkot sunrise guide has all the timings.
2. Go paragliding
Pokhara is one of the world’s best places for tandem paragliding. You launch from Sarangkot and soar over the lake with the Himalaya as a backdrop — no experience needed, and the views are unforgettable.
3. Boat on Phewa Lake
Hire a colourful doonga (rowboat) or take a guided ride across Phewa Lake to the island Tal Barahi Temple. It is the calm heart of Pokhara, loveliest in the still of late afternoon.
4. Visit the World Peace Pagoda
The gleaming white Shanti Stupa above the lake offers the best panorama in the city — lake, town and mountains in one sweep. Reach it by car, boat-and-hike, or a short trek.
5. Explore caves and waterfalls
See Davis Falls, where the river disappears underground, and the sacred Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave opposite. The nearby Bat Cave is a fun add-on for the adventurous.
6. Learn at the International Mountain Museum
A genuinely excellent museum on Himalayan climbing history, mountain peoples and ecology — a great option on a hazy afternoon or with older children.
7. Take a day trip
When you have seen the city, the region opens up: the Newari hill town of Bandipur, quiet Begnas Lake, or a short trek taster. See our roundup of the best places to visit near Pokhara.
How to fit it all in
Pokhara’s sights are spread around the valley, so a little planning saves a lot of time — viewpoints early before the haze, the lake in the calm afternoon. A private car and driver ties the scattered spots together and lets you change plans on the fly. See our full-day sightseeing itinerary or the 3-day plan to see how it all fits.
Best time for each activity
Timing matters in Pokhara. Mountain views are sharpest at dawn, before the valley haze builds, so front-load Sarangkot and paragliding to the early morning. Paragliding also depends on wind and thermals, which are usually best from late morning on clear days — your pilot will advise. Boating on Phewa is loveliest in the calm of late afternoon. Across the year, October to April gives the clearest skies and the most reliable flying weather, while the monsoon is greener but often cloudy over the peaks.
A few local tips
- Carry small cash for temple and viewpoint tickets and the boat jetty.
- Wear layers — early mornings up high are cool even when Lakeside is warm.
- Ask your driver about quieter viewpoints and the best photo spots most day-tours skip.
- Leave a buffer for weather — if a viewpoint is clouded, a cave or the museum makes a good swap.
